The idea of holding torch relay was introduced by Carl Diem, president of the Organization Committee for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, as a propaganda opportunity for the Third Reich. Media coverage of the 1936 relay was managed by Goebbels himself. The journey of the torch was covered by radio and was filmed by Leni Riefenstahl. Just before the torch was lit, Adolph Hitler declared "Sporting chivalrous contest helps knit the bonds of peace between nations. Therefore may the Olympic flame never expire."

The route of the torch passed through Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Germany.

In London, a protester almost put out the torch, and another almost succeeded in grabbing it, even though £1 million pounds were spent and 2,000 police were on hand as well as the Chinese "guards," men in blue brought over by the Beijing organizing committee. It has now been revealed that these "flame attendants" were highly-trained killers from crack Chinese military special forces units who the Chairman of the London Olympic Committee was overheard describing as "thugs" by Channel 4 News.
