Because of my fascination with studying the Arabic language, I ended up spending a year in Syria. I didn’t really want to go there, but I did what any good American would do and followed my economic instincts. Studying Arabic in Syria costs about a third of the price elsewhere, so in order to continue my language learning, and as an impulsive trial only, I found myself alone on the streets of central Damascus.
