Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari Special Envoy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama April 3rd, 2008 Below is the complete article written by Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari, the Dalai Lama's Special Envoy, followed by the version edited due to space constraints which appeared in the International Herald Tribune on April 3, 2008. In the last few weeks we have witnessed an uprising against the Chinese authorities' repressive policies on the Tibetan plateau, the likes of which we have not seen in a generation. A terrifying crackdown has begun on a scale never seen before in Tibet, in the full glare of the world's attention just months before the Olympics in Beijing.

4 Vote(s)

Bao Tong, former aide to ousted late premier Zhao Ziyang, says both Tibetans and Han Chinese have suffered at the hands of a Maoist political philosophy. He wrote this essay, broadcast by RFA's Mandarin service, from his Beijing home, where he has lived under house arrest since his release from jail in the wake of the 1989 student movement: Take harmony seriously; talk to the Dalai Lama by Bao Tong

5 Vote(s)

The idea of holding torch relay was introduced by Carl Diem, president of the Organization Committee for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, as a propaganda opportunity for the Third Reich. Media coverage of the 1936 relay was managed by Goebbels himself. The journey of the torch was covered by radio and was filmed by Leni Riefenstahl. Just before the torch was lit, Adolph Hitler declared "Sporting chivalrous contest helps knit the bonds of peace between nations. Therefore may the Olympic flame never expire." The route of the torch passed through Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Germany. In London, a protester almost put out the torch, and another almost succeeded in grabbing it, even though 1 million pounds were spent and 2,000 police were on hand as well as the Chinese "guards," men in blue brought over by the Beijing organizing committee. It has now been revealed that these "flame attendants" were highly-trained killers from crack Chinese military special forces units who the Chairman of the London Olympic Committee was overheard describing as "thugs" by Channel 4 News.

4 Vote(s)

On 27 March 2008, a monk Lobsang Jinpa of Ngaba Kirti Monastery committed suicide. He hailed from Ngasib Village in Amdo Ngaba. In his signed suicide note, Lobsang stated, "the Chinese government has leveled false allegations against the monks of Kirti Monastery for leaking State Secrets to the outside world, leading and organizing the protests and for keeping the dead bodies of Tibetan protesters shot dead by the Chinese security forces. However, all the charges leveled by the Chinese government were not committed by anyone in Kirti Monastery, but carried out solely by me". The note further stated "I led the peaceful protest, and I am solely responsible for the protest". The suicide note carried a poignant end line, it reads, "I do not want to live under the Chinese oppression even for a minute, leave aside living for a day."

3 Vote(s)

Adolf Hitler's glee at exploiting the 1936 Berlin Olympics as a showcase for Nazism turned to fury when the black American athlete Jesse Owens won four gold medals. The Chinese leadership must by now be wondering whether staging the Games in Beijing will bring the regime more accolades than brickbats. Be careful what you wish for, as Confucius probably said. In defence of the Olympic movement, Berlin had been selected before the Nazis came to power. No such excuse covers the decision to award the coveted prize to Beijing. In 1989 the Chinese government crushed the peaceful protests in Tiananmen Square as the world looked on in horror. China still secured the Olympics and a propaganda triumph and has looked forward to showing off to the world.

2 Vote(s)

Of course, some bad news about the Chinese government is already known: no political freedom, no religious freedom, no freedom of speech, no freedom of the press, no worker's rights, work camps where unknown millions have been imprisoned, Catholics arrested who then "disappeared" along with Falun Gong practitioners and Buddhists (including the next Dalai Lama, a child who "disappeared" in 1995); forced abortions and sterilations for women who violate the rules of the one-child policy; a cruel and excessive use of the death penalty (90% of the world's executions take place in China, which are believed to be over 10,000 a year whose organs are removed without permission).
