We write today to respectfully urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to take all necessary steps to bring about a peaceful resolution to the current crisis in Tibet and to respect the human rights of the Tibetan people.First and foremost, we ask that the Chinese government remove its restrictions on the media and communications, and allow independent monitors and the foreign press unfettered access to the region. We believe that lack of reliable information is only fueling uncertainty, causing resentment and discord on both sides of the issue. Increased transparency will be an important factor in resolving the conflict and is the best assurance against further escalation of the violence.

4 Vote(s)

The idea of holding torch relay was introduced by Carl Diem, president of the Organization Committee for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, as a propaganda opportunity for the Third Reich. Media coverage of the 1936 relay was managed by Goebbels himself. The journey of the torch was covered by radio and was filmed by Leni Riefenstahl. Just before the torch was lit, Adolph Hitler declared "Sporting chivalrous contest helps knit the bonds of peace between nations. Therefore may the Olympic flame never expire." The route of the torch passed through Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Germany. In London, a protester almost put out the torch, and another almost succeeded in grabbing it, even though 1 million pounds were spent and 2,000 police were on hand as well as the Chinese "guards," men in blue brought over by the Beijing organizing committee. It has now been revealed that these "flame attendants" were highly-trained killers from crack Chinese military special forces units who the Chairman of the London Olympic Committee was overheard describing as "thugs" by Channel 4 News.

4 Vote(s)

Two monks commit suicide in Amdo Ngaba According to confirm information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), two monks committed suicide in Amdo Ngaba (Ch: Aba) as a direct result of relentless oppression by the Chinese security forces after the series of peaceful protests. On 27 March 2008, a monk Lobsang Jinpa of Ngaba Kirti Monastery committed suicide. He hailed from Ngasib Village in Amdo Ngaba. In his signed suicide note, Lobsang stated, "the Chinese government has leveled false allegations against the monks of Kirti Monastery for leaking State Secrets to the outside world, leading and organizing the protests and for keeping the dead bodies of Tibetan protesters shot dead by the Chinese security forces. However, all the charges leveled by the Chinese government were not committed by anyone in Kirti Monastery, but carried out solely by me". The note further stated "I led the peaceful protest, and I am solely responsible for the protest". The suicide note carried a poignant end line, it reads, "I do not want to live under the Chinese oppression even for a minute, leave aside living for a day."

3 Vote(s)
